In the summer of 1933, 14 Hilltop business owners ran a full-page ad in The Herald announcing the Pleasantville Merchants Picnic, held on Aug. 16. Each 25-cent purchase netted a raffle ticket good for a grand prize of $50, to be awarded the evening of the concert and dance at the Odd Fellow’s Hall. Free coffee and doughnuts were served all day.
