News of Pleasantville

In the summer of 1933, 14 Hilltop business owners ran a full-page ad in The Herald announcing the Pleasantville Merchants Picnic, held on Aug. 16. Each 25-cent purchase netted a raffle ticket good for a grand prize of $50, to be awarded the evening of the concert and dance at the Odd Fellow’s Hall. Free coffee and doughnuts were served all day.

Budapest: Hungarian capital called Pearl of the Danube

Before I went to Budapest, a friend told me that for her it conjured images of Eastern European dissidents and women with hairy legs. I hadnt considered either. What I knew about Budapest could be summed up in a few phrases: Eastern European, recently communist (until 1990), a relatively new NATO member. And always the refrain I heard from people who had been there: “The women are beautiful.”

Biography: Susan made him tilt and Frank, happily, was never the same

“Hey, Red, you owe me a nickel!” Frank was playing pinball at Liberty Cafe on the North Side when the short, red-haired waitress bumped into the machine. A red light flashed “tilt” and the game was over. Reaching into her apron pocket, Susan pulled out a nickel and flicked it to him before waiting on her next customer.

Fiddler Ben Lacy, 90, founded the Prairie Ramblers

Ben Lacy, who founded a fiddling group that played all over southern Colorado for years, died July 12 at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo. He was 90.
